What is Golden pocket?
Oltin cho'ntak
In short
The narrow zone between the 61.8% and 65% Fibonacci retracement levels. Because many traders watch it, pullbacks often pause there — but there is no guarantee.
Also known as: golden zone, 0.618–0.65
The golden pocket is the narrow zone between the 61.8% and 65% Fibonacci retracement levels. The name comes from the "golden ratio" (0.618). Because many traders watch this exact zone, pullbacks often slow down or pause there.
How it is calculated
Take the start (A) and end (B) of the impulse. For an upward impulse:
- 61.8% level = B − (B − A) × 0.618
- 65% level = B − (B − A) × 0.65
The zone between the two prices is the golden pocket.
When it is used
As an entry area after a deeper pullback within a clear trend. On its own the zone is weak; when it forms confluence with other levels it becomes much more meaningful.
Limitations
The result depends on which A and B you choose — different traders measure different impulses. And "many people watch it" does not mean "price will stop": in heavy selling price slices straight through. That's why the stop usually goes below the 78.6% level or the start of the impulse.
Impulse $80 → $100. The golden pocket (61.8–65%) is $87.64–87.00, with old resistance at $88 (now support) right above it. Price dipped to $87.1 and closed at $88 with a hammer-like candle. Stop below 78.6% ($84.28) — at $84.
Example
An illustrative stock rallied from $50 to $70 (a $20 impulse).
- 61.8%: $70 − $20 × 0.618 = $70 − $12.36 = $57.64.
- 65%: $70 − $20 × 0.65 = $70 − $13 = $57.00.
- Golden pocket: $57.00–$57.64.
Price dropped to $57.40 and closed with a long lower wick. The trader enters at $57.40 and places the stop below the 78.6% level ($70 − $15.72 = $54.28), at $54. Risk is $3.40 per share. The target is the prior high of $70: a $12.60 gain, so R:R ≈ 1:3.7. Size the trade with the position size calculator.
Mistakes and tips
Draw the impulse between clear swing points on the higher timeframe — Fibonacci drawn from random points is useless.
Rather than "set a limit order and forget it", wait for a confirmation candle: in a strong decline price passes through the pocket without stopping.
The same logic works in a downtrend, just inverted: a 61.8–65% bounce upward acts as a selling zone.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is the golden pocket 61.8% to 65%?
- 61.8% is the "golden ratio" derived from the Fibonacci sequence; 65% is a nearby practical boundary added to turn the level into a zone. It's a widely watched convention, not a mathematical law.
- Should you always buy in the golden pocket?
- No. It is only a zone to watch: without a trend, a confirmation candle and other evidence, an entry there has no real basis.
