What is Volume?

Savdo hajmi

In short

The number of shares traded over a period. Price moves on heavy volume are generally more meaningful.

Also known as: hajm

Volume is the number of shares that changed hands over a period (a day, an hour, five minutes). The bars under a chart show the volume during each candle. Each trade is counted once: if a seller sells 100 shares to a buyer, volume rises by 100, not 200.

What volume tells you

Volume is the "force" or interest behind a move. Even if the price rises by the same amount, it makes a big difference whether thousands of participants did it or a handful.

  • Breakouts on volume. When the price clears resistance on much higher volume than usual, there is more likely to be real demand behind it.
  • Moves without volume. A rise or fall on light volume is often unreliable and can reverse quickly (a false breakout).
  • Climax. Very heavy volume at the end of a long trend is sometimes a sign of exhaustion — most people have already got in or out.

How to use it

Always compare volume with the stock's own average: a million shares is normal for one stock and a record for another. Relative volume (RVOL) is handy for this. Dollar volume (volume × price) helps judge liquidity. Volume is a confirming tool used alongside price — it does not tell you the direction on its own. Indicators such as VWAP are also built on volume.

Volume confirms the breakout
$58$60$63$65Resistance ~$60Breakout: 3× volumeVolume

Average volume over the previous 10 candles was 40; the breakout candle traded 120 — relative volume 3×. Price closed at $61.80, well above resistance. In the last two candles, though, the new high ($64.80) came on light volume (40 and 32) — the move is slowing.

Example

A fictional stock's average daily volume is 2,000,000 shares. Resistance sits at $30.

  • Case 1: the price closes above $30 on 5,000,000 shares. That is 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5 times the average. Dollar volume: 5M × $30 = $150M. There is strong interest behind the breakout.
  • Case 2: the price closes above $30 on 1,200,000 shares — just 1.2 ÷ 2 = 0.6 of the average. Confidence in this breakout is low, and the chance of the price falling back below resistance is higher.

The price is the same in both cases, but the force behind it is completely different.

Mistakes and tips

  • Compare volume with the stock's own average, not with other stocks.

  • Early in the day, do not compare today's volume with previous full days — the day is not over; you need time-adjusted relative volume for that.

  • Volume does not show direction: heavy volume can be buying or selling pressure — read it together with price action.

Frequently asked questions

Does high volume mean the price will go up?
Not necessarily. High volume only means activity is high; the direction comes from the candles and the context.
What is a normal trading volume?
There is no universal number — every stock has its own typical volume. The average of the last 20–50 days is usually used as the baseline.
