What is CHoCH (change of character)?

CHoCH (xarakter o'zgarishi)

In short

The first break against the trend: in an uptrend the last HL low breaks down. An early hint of a reversal, not a confirmation.

Also known as: change of character

A CHoCH (change of character) is the first structure break against the trend. In an uptrend it is a break below the last HL; in a downtrend, a break above the last LH.

Why it's an early hint, not a confirmation

A CHoCH shows the trend is no longer behaving as before: buyers failed to defend the last low. But it is not yet a reversal — price can turn back up and resume the old trend. A reversal is usually confirmed by a BOS in the new direction: for example, a lower high (LH) followed by a new lower low (LL).

How it is used

  • For a trader holding a long: a CHoCH is a cue to take partial profit or tighten the stop.
  • For a reversal trader: after a CHoCH, wait for price to return to the zone where the new move started (an order block or FVG) and look for an entry there.
  • In multi-timeframe trading: a lower-timeframe CHoCH inside a higher-timeframe zone serves as an entry trigger.

Limitations

In strong trends CHoCHs often fail. On low timeframes they appear on almost every pullback. Trading against the trend on a CHoCH alone is a high-risk approach.

Market structure: BOS and CHoCH
$100$110BOSBOSCHoCHHLHLlast HLHH

BOS — the previous high was broken, the trend continues. CHoCH — the last HL broke: structure changed, the uptrend is in doubt.

Reversal from a downtrend: CHoCH and the first HL
$110$115$120Target $118.4Stop $112BOSBOSCHoCH $114.6LHLHLL $108HL $112.4

LH/LL is a downtrend, each new LL is a BOS. Price closed above the last LH ($114.6) — a CHoCH. Entry after the first HL ($112.4) at $114, stop $112, target the earlier LH at $118.4: risk $2, reward $4.4 (2.2R).

Example

A fictional stock in an uptrend: HL $104 → HH $116 → HL $109 → HH $122.

  • Price falls from $122 and closes at $107.80 — the last HL ($109) is broken. That is a CHoCH.
  • Price then rallies to $115 but can't reach $122 — a LH.
  • It then breaks below $107.80 and closes at $103 — a bearish BOS, a new LL. Now the reversal is confirmed.

A trader who exited at the CHoCH got a better price than one who waited for full confirmation; but the same CHoCH could have failed, with price going on to $125.

Mistakes and tips

  • Don't treat a CHoCH as confirmation of a reversal — wait for a BOS in the new direction or keep size small.

  • If you trade a CHoCH against the higher-timeframe trend, use a firm stop and work out the risk/reward in advance.

  • Confirm the break with a candle close, not a wick.

Frequently asked questions

Does the trend always change after a CHoCH?
No. A CHoCH only raises the odds; in strong trends price often recovers and continues in the original direction.
On which timeframe is CHoCH more reliable?
Higher timeframes (4-hour, daily) have less noise, so the signal is more reliable. On low timeframes it is mostly used to time entries.
