What is Market structure?
Bozor tuzilmasi
In short
The sequence of highs and lows: HH/HL — uptrend, LH/LL — downtrend. A change in structure is the first sign of a trend change.
Market structure is the sequence of swing points (highs and lows) on a price chart. It is a way to read the trend from price alone, without indicators.
The basic labels
- HH (higher high) and HL (higher low). HH + HL = uptrend.
- LH (lower high) and LL (lower low). LH + LL = downtrend.
- When highs and lows show no clear order — a sideways range.
How structure changes
In an uptrend, when price takes out the previous high, that is a BOS — the trend continues. If price breaks the last HL to the downside, that is a CHoCH — the first sign the trend is tiring. If price then starts printing LHs and LLs, structure has turned bearish.
Why it matters
Structure tells you which direction makes more sense to trade and where the stop-loss belongs: in an uptrend it usually sits below the last HL. Structure depends on the timeframe: the daily chart can be bullish while the 15-minute chart is bearish. That is why it is used with multi-timeframe analysis.
BOS — the previous high was broken, the trend continues. CHoCH — the last HL broke: structure changed, the uptrend is in doubt.
Example
Say a fictional stock on the daily chart:
- Low $100 → high $110 → low $104 (HL) → high $116 (HH) → low $109 (HL) → high $122 (HH)
This is a clean uptrend. For a long trade the logical stop is below the last HL — just under $109. Later price rallies only to $119, fails to exceed $122 (LH), breaks below $109 and drops to $105 (LL). Structure has now turned bearish: the reason for new long trades is gone.
Mistakes and tips
Don't label every small wiggle as a swing — use clear, obvious turning points.
Confirm a break with a candle close, not a wick; otherwise you'll get caught in many false breakouts.
Identify structure on the higher timeframe first, then look for entries on the lower one.
Frequently asked questions
- What do HH, HL, LH and LL mean?
- They stand for higher high, higher low, lower high and lower low. They help define trend direction without indicators.
- What is the difference between market structure and a trendline?
- A trendline connects lows with a straight line, while structure looks at the relative position of highs and lows. A structure change often shows up before or together with a trendline break.
