What is Hidden divergence?

Yashirin divergensiya

In short

A trend-continuation sign: in an uptrend price makes a higher low while RSI makes a lower low. Unlike regular divergence, it points to the end of a pullback, not a reversal.

Also known as: hidden bullish divergence

Hidden divergence is a mismatch between price and an oscillator (usually RSI), but unlike regular divergence it signals that the trend may continue.

Two types

  • Hidden bullish: price makes a higher low (HL) while RSI makes a lower low. Momentum cooled sharply during the pullback, yet the price structure held — the uptrend may resume.
  • Hidden bearish: price makes a lower high (LH) while RSI makes a higher high. The bounce in a downtrend looked strong, but price couldn't exceed the previous high.

How it differs from regular divergence

Regular divergence appears at extremes, when price makes a new high or low and the indicator doesn't, and warns of a reversal. Hidden divergence is the opposite: it suggests the pullback is ending and the main trend may resume.

How it's used

The trend must be clear first — looking for hidden divergence in a sideways market is pointless. Find the signal at the pullback low, enter after a confirmation candle, and place the stop below the latest low. It's still no guarantee: the trend can end right there.

Hidden bullish divergence
$100$105$110$115HL $105.6HL $107.8$112.47030RSI (14)

In an uptrend price made a higher low ($105.6 → $107.8) while RSI made a lower one (≈69.5 → ≈58.8). Not a reversal — a continuation sign: the pullback "felt" deep, but structure held. Price took out $112.4 and closed at $114.4.

Example

An illustrative stock in an uptrend:

  • Low 1: price $95, RSI 42.
  • Low 2 after a pullback: price $101 (a higher low), RSI 36 (a lower low).

That is hidden bullish divergence. The next day price closed at $104 with a strong bullish candle. The trader enters at $104 with a stop below low 2 at $100.50 (risk $3.50). The target is the prior high of $115: an $11 gain, R:R ≈ 1:3.1. A close below $101 would break the higher low and cancel the idea.

Mistakes and tips

  • Look for hidden divergence only in a clear trend — check it with market structure.

  • Compare price lows by the candle wicks and RSI lows on those same candles — don't mix in other candles.

  • Don't enter the moment the signal appears; wait for a candle confirming the pullback is over.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between hidden and regular divergence?
Regular divergence hints that the trend may reverse; hidden divergence hints that the trend may continue after a pullback.
Which indicator is best for hidden divergence?
RSI and MACD are the most common. The clarity of the trend and your entry rules matter more than the indicator.
