What it calculates
Calculates the net profit/loss and percent change of a closed (or planned) spot trade. Spot only: you buy, then you sell — no leverage, no shorts.
Formula
PnL = (Exit − Entry) × Size Change% = (Exit − Entry) ÷ Entry × 100%
Example
Given
- Entry — $2.50
- Exit — $2.90
- Size — 400 units
- Profit per unit: $2.90 − $2.50 = $0.40.
- PnL: $0.40 × 400 = $160.
- Change: $0.40 ÷ $2.50 = 0.16 → +16%.
Result: $160 net profit, i.e. +16%.
Tip
Fees and taxes are not included here. Broker commission (often $0 at US brokers) and the spread still shave a little off the result — if you trade often, that adds up.
Frequently asked questions
- How is PnL calculated?
- (Exit price − Entry price) × number of shares. Percent change: (Exit − Entry) ÷ Entry × 100%.
- Are commissions and taxes included?
- No. Many US brokers charge $0 commission, but the spread and taxes still reduce the result slightly.
- Does it work for short trades?
- No — spot only: you buy first, then sell.
