What it calculates
The reverse of compounding: how many trades it takes to get from your current balance to a target. Enter "trades per day" to also get an estimate in days/months.
Formula
Without contributions: n = ln(Target ÷ Start) ÷ ln(1 + Gain%) With contributions: n = ln((Target + k) ÷ (Start + k)) ÷ ln(1 + g), k = Contribution ÷ g
Example
Given
- Starting balance — $1000
- Target balance — $10,000
- Gain per trade — 2%
- Trades per day — 1
- Required growth: $10,000 ÷ $1000 = 10×.
- n = ln(10) ÷ ln(1.02) = 2.3026 ÷ 0.0198 = 116.3 → rounded up: 117 trades.
- Check: 1.02^117 = 10.14 → $1000 × 10.14 = $10,144. Target cleared.
- At 1 trade per day: 117 days ≈ 3.9 months.
Result: At +2% per trade it takes ~117 trades — about 3.9 months at one trade a day.
Tip
The number is motivating, but it assumes EVERY trade wins. In reality you'll have losers, so the real timeline is longer. Filling in "contribution per trade" makes the estimate more realistic.
Frequently asked questions
- What formula is it based on?
- The inverse of compounding: n = ln(Target ÷ Start) ÷ ln(1 + gain%). Regular contributions are included if you enter them.
- How realistic is the result?
- It assumes every trade wins. In practice there are losing trades too, so the real timeline is longer.
- How are days and months calculated?
- Enter your average number of trades per day and the trade count is converted into days and months.
