About David Abrams

A famously private Baupost alumnus who runs an unlevered, long-term value fund in Boston.

Life story

David Abrams earned a BA in History from the University of Pennsylvania. Very little is publicly known about his birth year, family or childhood — he is known for avoiding interviews and public appearances.

How they got started

Abrams entered finance after college without much of a plan, starting in merger arbitrage and special situations. He then joined Seth Klarman's The Baupost Group to broaden his experience beyond arbitrage and spent about ten years there — which is why he is often called a "Klarman cub".

After leaving Baupost and taking a year off, he founded Abrams Capital Management in Boston in 1999. According to a 2012 Boston Globe report, the firm buys stocks and debt it considers undervalued and raised billions of dollars for a new fund. Abrams remains the firm's CEO and portfolio manager.

Investment style

Abrams Capital describes itself as an unlevered, long-term, broad-mandate generalist. The core idea is to find companies the market has temporarily undervalued and wait patiently for their value to be recognised.

Alongside the numbers, qualitative judgment — deep relationships with management, competitive analysis — plays a central role. The fund can invest in bonds and other debt as well as stocks.

Best decisions

Launching after a downturn (1999)

Abrams started his fund after the 1998 market sell-off, a favourable moment for value investors, and grew it into a multi-billion-dollar firm without leverage.

Investor confidence (2012)

According to the Boston Globe, the firm raised billions for a new fund from hundreds of investors each committing at least $5 million — a sign of confidence in its long-term record.

Biggest mistakes

Limited information

Because Abrams avoids the public eye, no reliable public sources were found on his failed investments or mistakes he has acknowledged.

Today

Abrams continues to run Abrams Capital. He serves on the board of trustees of Berklee College of Music and as an overseer of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts and Sciences.

What to learn from following the portfolio

  • Abrams is a concentrated, long-term holder — so a new position or a meaningful increase is a stronger signal of conviction.
  • A 13F shows only long US-listed equity positions; the fund's bond and other debt investments don't appear here.
  • Filings are up to 45 days late — less critical for a value investor, but prices may already have moved.
  • From a halal perspective: value funds often own highly indebted or financial-sector companies — check each position's halal status in the Portfolio tab.
