A highly concentrated investment firm run by Mark Massey that makes long-term bets on a few great businesses.
Life story
AltaRock Partners' portfolio manager is Mark Massey. AltaRock Fund LP made its first SEC filing in 2002; the firm's current SEC filings list West Palm Beach, Florida as its address. Reliable public information about Massey's background, family and education is scarce.
How they got started
The firm keeps a low profile and rarely makes its investor letters public. A 2011 letter stated that the fund had compounded at 11.9% a year since Massey became portfolio manager.
Investment style
Massey has described the approach as investing "with the mindset of a long-term business owner," seeking superior businesses with durable competitive advantages. The portfolio is very concentrated — typically a handful of companies, with the largest positions making up most of it.
Today
The firm is active in 2026 and continues to file 13F reports. We found no reliable public sources on the results of individual investments.
What to learn from following the portfolio
- In such a concentrated portfolio every position signals high conviction; companies held for years deserve the most attention.
- Copying a few-stock portfolio wholesale means high risk — trouble at one company hits the whole result.
- A "quality business" approach often leads to technology and industrial companies, which may be halal, while financials usually are not — check each position's halal status in the Portfolio tab.
- 13F data lags up to 45 days and shows only long U.S. stocks.
