About Sarah Ketterer

Co-founder and CEO of Causeway Capital Management — an investor specialising in international value stocks.

Life story

Sarah Ketterer earned a BA in economics and political science from Stanford and an MBA from Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business in 1987. Her late father, John Hotchkis, co-founded the well-known value firm Hotchkis & Wiley. Little is publicly known about her childhood or year of birth.

How they got started

Ketterer joined Hotchkis & Wiley, the firm her father co-founded, and with Harry Hartford built its international equity business. After Merrill Lynch acquired the firm and later tried to sell it, Ketterer and Hartford founded Causeway Capital Management in 2001.

The start was hard: it took three years to reach positive cash flow, assets halved in the 2008 crisis, and there were long stretches when value investing was out of favour. By 2013 the firm had recovered and repaid its seed investor.

Investment style

Causeway manages equities globally, combining fundamental and quantitative research. The fundamental team is organised by global sectors and focuses on buying or selling at the right price and the right time; the quantitative team runs emerging-markets and international small-cap strategies with multi-factor models.

As a leader Ketterer stresses humility, transparency and teamwork, and the firm works to five-year strategic plans.

Best decisions

From start-up to a $76bn firm

Founded by two people in 2001, the firm survived several crises to become a global manager with about $76bn in assets and 110 employees by 2026.

Biggest mistakes

The 2008 crisis

During the financial crisis the firm's assets under management roughly halved; recovering and repaying its seed investor took until 2013.

Today

In 2026 Ketterer remains CEO and one of Causeway's fundamental portfolio managers, with Harry Hartford still her partner. As of September 30, 2026 the firm managed about $76.1bn.

What to learn from following the portfolio

  • Causeway focuses mainly on non-US stocks — 13F shows only the US-traded part (including ADRs), so this portfolio is not the firm's full picture.
  • International value portfolios often include banks, insurers and heavily indebted industrials, which are usually not halal. Check each position's halal status in the Portfolio tab.
  • At a large, diversified manager any single position is small; the most useful signals are meaningful stake increases or a move into a new sector.
  • 13F is 45 days delayed — copying it is not a strategy.
